Shadowlark The Skylark Trilogy Meagan Spooner Books

Shadowlark is the sequel to Skylark. If you haven't read that yet, I strongly recommend starting with it; this isn't a series you want to jump into the middle of.

Shadowlark reads like Skylark to me. The issues I had with Skylark are issues in Shadowlark, and the things that entranced me in Skylark are here as well. If you liked Skylark, I can't see you disliking this, and if you hated Skylark, don't expect things to get better.

Lark is still a generally uninteresting protagonist. She's not a Mary Sue, but there wasn't much personality there either. In Shadowlark she at least seems to have *opinions* occasionally. I guess that Lark's character only really bothers me when I stop to think about it though; the books read like 2nd-person stories told in the third-person. When I'm actually reading I'm completely fine using Lark's eyes as a window to her world.

Lark's world is the reason to read this book. Spooner has created a vivid, fascinating setting. My favorite element, the shadow people, remain tragic and terrifying. And, as the title 'Shadowlark' implies, this book introduces a moral gray area not present in Skylark, as Lark struggles with her powers.

In short: fantastic.

Shadowlark The Skylark Trilogy Meagan Spooner Books Reviews

Ever since I finished Skylark, I’d been waiting to get a chance to read Shadowlark, because I was so curious about where Lark’s travels would take her next, and how things would play out with some of the other characters. It was easy and comfortable for me to slide back into Lark’s story, and before I knew it, I’d been whisked away on a new adventure, complete with a sidekick, a mysterious destination, scary enemies, and a fussy pixie companion.

What continues to astound me about Meagan Spooner’s writing — especially with this series — is how deliberate every word feels. Each character, each scene, and each puzzle piece are all handled with such delicate care, that her love for this story just radiates out from the pages. Lark is determined, but cautious, leading her to get into some scary situations that force her to work her way out of them. Though the threats feel real and worrisome, I still felt a sense of calm knowing that she would get through them.

You might be thinking, “duh, this happens in just about every book,” but I’m not sure how else to explain it. I think what I’m trying to express is that I utterly trust her with this story and these characters, and that whatever happens, I know it will be true. I guess it’s rare that I feel this way so completely about an author or series.

Okay, but enough about that. This book was full of surprises, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Some interesting new techniques, revelations, and people. While some of it was a bit predictable, other parts caught me by surprise. I love the way that Spooner has combined elements from so many different genres into this series steampunk, fantasy/magic, science fiction (some REALLY cool things show up in this regard), a bit of dystopia, and so on.

Final verdict Shadowlark was a satisfying follow-up to a book I thoroughly enjoyed. If you’ve read and liked Skylark, pick this up as soon as possible! If you haven’t read Skylark — DO IT!
As promised
I would most definitely recommend this book. The mix of the magic (or the Resource) and the combat, and a bit of a love story all in one is wonderful. Book one is also very good. I think this is officially my favorite series, and believe me, I've read a lot of books and am even writing one myself. D
The characters are engagingly imperfect, and untrustworthy. The world building is ignored, which is a relief, but it still flies.
Not as heavy on the meat is murder message this time - also a relief.
My only disappointment is that I read this book way too fast! I'm definitely an Oren fan too! This author has created a whole new dystopian element that is new and fresh and you take the journey right along side Lark and you become fiercely loyal and hopeful and anxious and want it all to play out well as the story takes you up and down on an emotional roller coaster. This series is so awesome and I hate I'm stuck waiting for the author to be ready for book 3!!! Tick tock tick tock! Can't wait! Awesome read!
A perfect second book to this series, finding Lark growing wiser and stronger with a gift that cant be matched by any other. In search for her brother Basil, Lark, shadowed by Oren, the shadow boy she is in love with, ends up deep inside a city beneath the ground and chosen to lead an attack against their evil ruler. Let me tell you , that ends up a shocker!
The love story between Lark and Oren makes this whole story worth reading, but for those of you into magic and power then the story will give you a thrill ride.
This is a must read series...well written and with the wow factor.
Cant wait for book 3!
