Oh Dean I do love so many of your books. This one is unfortunately still not fully baked for me. Your Odd Thomas just kills it! I know you did a re-write on this to flesh it out more but don't stop yet. This could be an amazing story of AI and it's limitations. So relevant right now! I am a big believer in the AI issue of these machines getting massive knowledge but no wisdom as they have had no time to grow. Like a child takes over a year to walk and run. An AI can learn in 2.5 minutes! No time to tell it, "Don't step on someone's head it will hurt them". or "Watch out for that person in front of you, look how they are walking differently, maybe slowly, you could knock them down"!. I find Mr. Koontz a genius. Think this through a bit more and bam! best seller.

Demon Seed Dean Koontz 9780425158593 Books Reviews

This was my first time reading Koontz and enjoyed it very much. I only dabble in this genre so it was a pretty amazing read for me! I will be reading more of this author in the very near future!
I did not like this book. It was completely different and less emotional than any of your past books. The dialogue was boring and I didn't feel close to understanding or identifying with any of the characters. I'm still of a fan of Dean but stay away from science fiction.
This is not one of my favorite Dean Koontz stories. The final plot twist was great, and it was a quick, easy read, but I found it a little boring. I just couldn't work up any sympathy for this AI entity.
I read this book several years ago and loved it so I was wondering if I still loved it. The answer is a resounding yes. From a monster in a closed box to a monster in the flesh, the box keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. I highly recommend it.
Only 311 pages, so easy to read in 1/2 day by the pool. A home security computer with a crush on his mistress. H-M-M. Sounds like a plot from the old "Twilight Zone" series. Kind of a goofy plot. Weak character development. So-so ending.
I've read better Koontz novels. Thus the lower rating.
This was a great read. Easy to jump into and early on was hooked on the storyline. Was a fascinating idea that made you really wonder about the possibility of "What if..." In today's world where we have become so dependent on electronics/computers at work and at home it really presents a novel idea. You won't regret reading this one. It's not only thought provoking it has suspense. I was on the edge of my seat on a few parts.
Many years ago I read the original Demon Seed and completely enjoyed it. I saw the movie too and loved that. When I found Demon Seed had been released on the kindle I jumped up and bought it right away.

I was looking forward to rereading about Susan and the computer her obsessed husband designed. As I started to read it, I was confused. Had my memory betrayed me. Scenes in the book I did not remember. The computer talking about falling for Winona Ryder and Marilyn Monroe? But then it got worse. Corny voice cameos like a bad episode of the Simpsons including Fozzie Bear and Tom Cruise...

One of the more sinister elements, the tentacles that were used to control and protect had gone, replaced by a freaky pervert with chips in his head... It left my head spinning. Ouch, Ouch, Ouch. As the computer/ Fozzie said.

When re-imagining something for a new audience, I would have thought even a note on the books description stating this was a completely new version based on the original. Much as Asimov did with Fantastic Voyage II which the author wrote taking the original version's concept into a new story and setting. Like Lucas with re-releasing "improved and enhanced" versions of Star Wars, Koontz has created something that people will either love or hate. Myself, I frankly have come to hate it. Demon Seed 2.0 is what it should be called. Fans of the original may find themselves feeling lost, let down and disappointed by this new version.

I am sure it will gain a new generation of fans, people will like it for what it is. But in my humble opinion, it just feels like too much effort went into working in new ideas and currently popular themes and celebrities at the cost of what was a great story in it's own right.

One other reviewer suggested there should be a re-release with both versions and I fully agree. At the very least give people a chance to choose which version they prefer. I know for me I would take the unmolested original over this strange new version that deals with child abuse as a back story.

I would have to sum this book up as disappointing.
