This is an exceptionally well-written book. Ms. Nunez captures the time with great authenticity. I was in school during this era, and many episodes discussed in this book took place at my university. Characters are well defined as are certain situations. The level of Ann's commitment "to the cause" might be questionable to some readers. There were some passages requiring patience [rock concerts, drug use, etc.], however, the characters were so compelling that they captured my attention, and I read this through to the very end. I glad I did this since the writing is far above average!! It's worth reading!

The Last of Her Kind A Novel Sigrid Nunez 9780312425944 Books Reviews

For those of us who remember the politics of the 60's, this is the book....
The best novel I've read in 2007. Style, story, depth, character development, texture, humor and voice, all just great. I recommend this book for anyone who has lived those times or wants to get a personal feel what the 60's/70's were all about. Ms. Nunez has the gift of making the reader feel like it's just you and her in the room, and nothing else matters. I finished it in two days and immediately loaned it out to my circle.
Hey if you are female, in your sixties and were a little bit rebellious in your youth, you will like this book.
This was a very interesting book. I did not expect to be so drawn into the story but the author writes so skillfully and offers such detailed perspectives that it clarified some of my feelings about the charged topics of sex and race. I have recommended this book to many of my female friends. I do think women would appreciate this novel more than men but it may offer insight into women's thoughts and feelings that men may find enlightening.
Sigrid Nunez vividly captures the era she writes about. I couldn't put this book down! I meet the author at a book reading for charity and got to ask lots of questions about the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to recapture the wild explosive era of the 1960's. An excellent read.
Sixties idealism and it's aftermath ... thoroughly enjoyed it ... one of the better stories I've read in some time.
Sigrid Nunez tale is not of Two Cities, but of two classes in the turbulent times of the 1960s in the USA. It is a tale at times dead-on, an insightful rendition of the chaos and the chasms between haves and have nots, races, and cultures, rendered sometimes with pain and angst, sometimes with humour, and sometimes like a respite backwater pool away from the raging river.

The scene in the affluent restaurant, while Judy Collins sings "Both Sides Now" in the background, is sublime!
